Description

The Avalanche Peak Trail in Yellowstone National Park is a steep hike up to Avalanche Peak and one of the easiest chances to do some elevation gain in Yellowstone. The first part of the trail is through beautiful forest and alpine meadows. The second part is a steep and rocky ascent to the top. At the top you can follow the ridgeline and have stunning 360° views of Yellowstone Lake and the surrounding mountains. The top and ridgeline are broad and flat (no steep cliffs etc.).

For those of you suffering from vertigo: The ascent and descent are on a steep trail, but no part of the trail is completely exposed. The ridge is broad and rather easy to navigate.

FAQ

How difficult is the Avalanche Peak Trail?

Moderate. The 7.9 km round trip gains 660 m. The first section is through forest and meadows, then the trail climbs steeply and on rocky terrain to the summit.

Is bear spray necessary?

Yes. This is bear country in Yellowstone. We saw a grizzly mother and cub near the trail. Carry bear spray, especially if hiking in a group of fewer than four.

Where does the trail start?

There is a small but adequate parking lot at the trailhead. The trail is in the eastern part of Yellowstone National Park.

When is the best time to hike?

Summer, typically July through September, when the trail is free of snow. The summit gets very windy, so bring a wind jacket even on calm valley days.

Is the trail crowded?

No. This is one of the quieter trails in Yellowstone. After about 10 minutes of walking off the main approach, you will likely be alone. We met only a handful of people.
