Description

The Stoneman Trail is a well-know multi-day mountain bike loop in the Alps. It is located at the border of Austria/ East Tyrol and Italy/ South Tyrol and Veneto. It can be done in 1 to 3 days, with most people taking 2 days, spending the night in a hut along the way. The trails are overall not too technical and suitable for intermediate level bikers. However there are some parts of the trail where most people push/ carry the bike.

For those of you suffering from vertigo: The Demut passage right after Sillianer Hütte is a quite exposed, approximately 2 kilometer long part of the trail. Some people bike this part, but it is recommended to dismount if you do not feel comfortable.

FAQ

How difficult is the Stoneman Trail?

Intermediate. The 112 km mountain bike loop gains 4,058 m over two days. Trails are not too technical, but some steep and rocky sections require pushing or carrying the bike.

Do I need to register to ride the Stoneman?

Registration is optional. If you register at a hotel or the info point in Sexten, you get a starter package and a handmade trophy for finishing within 3 days. You can also ride for free without registering.

Can I do the Stoneman in 1, 2, or 3 days?

Yes. Most riders take 2 days (silver), but you can stretch it to 3 days (bronze) from a base in Sexten, or attempt it in 24 hours for the gold trophy.

When is the best time to ride?

July and August. Going too early may mean snow on high sections, and by early October snow storms are possible. Always check the weather forecast and trail conditions before departing.

Is the Demut passage rideable?

The Demut passage right after Sillianer Hutte is an exposed 2 km section. Some bikers ride it, but it is recommended to dismount if you are not comfortable with exposure.
